Our Shellback picks are almost identical to real turtle shell. They are made from Casein- a polymerized animal protein derived from milk products. This material shares the same physical properties as real turtle shell but are legal and more importantly, allows our picks to be made without harming any animals.

Unlike other companies, we are able to make our own stock on site and so we are able to produce the very best materials for our Shellback line of picks.

We believe that the best stock is made in small batches using the highest quality of raw materials- unlike commercial stocks, we do not add colour to ours as we believe it affects the final product tonally.

We also make picks from commercial stock for folks who like a bit of colour in their picks. These still sound wonderful as we have sourced for stock which is as close to our own as possible.

Think of it was stock raised from birth vs. raised from young stock- to continue our farming analogy!

All of our picks are made and shaped by hand. We do not use any CNC or automated process in the manufacture of these picks.

Care for your pick:

Our shellback picks are made from material that is hygroscopic. This means you should keep your pick as dry and as clean as possible. We recommend that you avoid having it enter the washer or the drier or any prolonged exposure to damp.

It is almost identical to tortoise shell: it burns, it’s edible, it can turn malleable with heat!

An ideal storage solution would be our Leatherback Pick Fobs. Made from real leather, these cases will help protect your picks from keys, coins, the damp as well as the hampster.
